Information:Rogers Park Children's Center is funded by Lutheran Social Services and has a program that is bi-lingual in providing a culturally, linguistically comprehensive learning environment that promotes social competency and school readiness for preschool children who are/may be academically and economically at risk. This design fosters development in; social, physical, cognitive, literacy, technology, language, math, science, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
The Children's Center is very diverse and has multiple languages offered such as English, Spanish, Arabic, and Urdu. While there are many languages being practiced, there are also many religions such as, Catholic, Christian, Muslim, etc. Teachers are equipped with strategies to support children through relationship building. The Program is also designed to empower, strengthen and support families through services and resources that will support their personal goals. This program has been in the community for over 40 years, providing services to a generation of families and children which is community based and has a head start. Adida's story and goals:When Adida (the manager of the children's center) first migrated to the States from India, she was a volunteer at local daycares and the Rogers Park Children's Center. When she heard of the opening in Roger's Park Children's Center, she saw a need to be a part of the program and facility.
Their goal is to expand their location and have full enrollment for the parents and school. Adida has been working for the children's center for over thirty-five years and ever since she has taken on the role of manager, she has been looking for a location to expand the day care, but hasn't been successful. She seeks a nice park for her children to play in, a parking lot for families to easily drop of children if needed, close local transportation, and lastly, the location she hopes of one day to expanding to, to be in the Rogers Park community. Accommodations:The children's center accommodates any special needs and works closely with ELL and ESL students and families.
Urdu is one of the most popular languages spoken at the children's center and to aid parents, Adida directs families to English classes, computer classes, and any other classes that can benefit the parents/family (also working closely with Hyat School). Some of their main educational resources is the Harold Washington Library, Hyat School, and National Lewis University, while working close with their practicum program. The children's center partners with local park districts, children museum, and the University of Illinois in Chicago. UIC provides dance lessons, field trips, etc but the schedule of the university does not work with the children's center and struggle with getting to the university and back. The age range of the children's center is three to five year olds, with the maximum capacity of forty children. They provide medical and dental services for the children, educational lessons, and potty-training, if need be. Directing families to local events such as bull games, navy pier, and more, to get families engaged in other communities and for them to spend time with their family. |
Want to volunteer?
Rogers Park Children's Center has an open door policy but if you are interested in volunteering, the screening process of volunteering is going through a ESAR, frequent physicals, a TB test, and a background check.
Adida decided to locate in the Roger's Park community since it is located on a main street and thanks to the multiple forms of transportation around (bus stop is across the street, train station is close, taxi's, driving, etc) it is easy to get to.
